The Listening Array

2008

This project includes a single-channel video, a site-specific video installation, and photographs.

The Listening Array is a term that refers to a series of microphones that correlate data to determine position. In the symbolism of baroque art, saints were identified by a golden halo, or nimbus, surrounding them. In both the video and photograph for The Listening Array, a group of six individuals sit at a formal dinner table, surrounded by an array of golden pipes. At the end of each pipe, an ordinary person stands listening. Whether they are venerating those seated at the table or gathering information to undermine their efforts is up for grabs. The soundtrack is the Russian funeral march, Вы жертвою пали (You Fell Victims) [1878].
