While She Waits For The Light

2009-2019

This project includes a single channel video, a site-specific video installation, and additional photographs in the series.

The set for the video is loosely organized around Carlo Crivelli’s The Annunciation of St Emidis, 1480. The “annunciation” in the painting is depicted as a ray of light that originates in the clouds and cuts a diagonal line through a small window in a building, through a dove with a golden halo, and stops at a woman’s head.  In the video, a “light” is picked up by a preacher-like performer and passed through a window into a white space, where a woman moves it to a second window, and delivers it to a couple who are deep in conversation.

The soundtrack is Send the Light (1890), sung by Helen Dunkin, Murray McMillan’s grandmother, and her small Baptist congregation in Dallas, Texas.
