You Bring Me Up Don’t Let Me Down

2023-Permanent

Hidden within the narrow staircase that winds through the Wedding Cake House’s turret, the work features a miniature architectural reconstruction of that stair—painted turquoise and built to scale within a small viewing aperture. Inside, four sculptural figures—modeled on the artists and their two children—climb the steps in an endless ascent. The figures are frozen mid-motion, illuminated by the tower’s natural skylight, appearing caught between labor and levitation.

The installation is not immediately visible; it must be discovered by leaning close to a small opening in the floor of the tower room, transforming the act of viewing into one of intimacy and curiosity. Through this concealed design, the McMillans embed a quiet, perpetual family narrative within the architecture of the house itself.
